Oct 23, 2020 · The Experimental Lake Erie Hypoxia forecast is updated daily, and uses a hydrodynamic model and weather forecast data to predict the location and movement of hypoxic bottom water up to five days in advance. Hypoxia is a condition of low dissolved oxygen (< 2 mg/L) that can be harmful to aquatic life. Hypoxic upwelling events along the coast can ...
May 27, 2024 · Hypoxia, “aquatic hypoxia,” or oxygen depletion is often a naturally occurring event. In bodies of water, oxygen depletion causes “dead zones” where marine life can’t survive. It is typically characterized by oxygen levels below 2 mg/L. Hypoxia can disrupt ecosystems, marine biodiversity, and have significant recreational and economic ...
These hypoxic conditions reduced the habitat quality for all fish studied, but the degree of effect varied with species and life stage based on differences in low-oxygen and warm-water tolerances. Across years, trends in habitat quality mirrored trends in phosphorus concentration and water column oxygen demand in central Lake Erie.
Oct 28, 2024 · Even underwater, oxygen is essential for life and so hypoxic bottom water regions are often referred to as "dead zones." Hypoxia is bad news for lake whitefish that prefer the cold bottom water of Lake Erie. But, while the cyanobacteria in algal blooms thrive in fertile, nutrient-rich waters, so too do the plankton that feed the lake's larger fish.
Jul 16, 2024 · In July 2024, GLERL and partners announced that the tool, known as the Lake Erie Hypoxia Forecast, became fully operational and is now available to water plant managers in the region. Lake Erie’s central basin is a vital drinking water source for over two million people along the Ohio coast, but drinking water treatment plants in this region face significant challenges during the summer.
Oct 28, 2024 · Hypoxia is bad news for lake whitefish that prefer the cold bottom water of Lake Erie, said Stuart Ludsin, a professor in the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory at Ohio State University.

Oct 28, 2024 · Nutrient-rich runoff water from fields helps fuel the infamous algal blooms in Lake Erie—as well as, for example, in the northern Gulf of Mexico and Chesapeake Bay. When the algae and cyanobacteria in those blooms die, they sink to the bottom of the water and decompose, consuming enough oxygen in the process to render the water hypoxic.
