Feb 2, 2023 · Comics from the big 2 (DC and Marvel) you can’t really jump into any story because there’s a huge amount of backstory for certain characters, if one a certain origin or event got recon, etc. Recently I got into manga but even as someone who loves comic books admits that getting into Superhero comics is a bit of a chore when most people just want to read a simple story.
Superheroes and Shonen are 2 massive genres but both of them follow similar story structure and themes. Also these are visual mediums and comics are always gonna take it over manga just off the fact that comic books are released w fully finished full color artwork. Weekly manga releases and even monthly sometimes has terrible artwork.
Let’s identify the main common points and differences between manga and comic books! Obviously, we won’t be able to cover absolutely every type of comic or manga, there are just way too many styles to cover. So, let’s use the most popular genres in each as a representative example. This would be superhero comics and Nekketsu shonen manga.
Western comic makers do not make it easy on their customers to actually get the source material other than online .. which can be REALLY expensive considering majority of comics are 50+ years old. Manga on the other hand can be found with consecutive volumes in piles on piles in any library store, and they even sell box sets containing the ENTIRE manga collection online.

Based on this logic I thnik that manga/comic is a better medium to tell the story. The author is forced to use less text to tell the story, so he needs to use a really eleborated text in order to tell the story andm ake it deep in a small sentence. This alone provide a lot of richness to the story.
