Jan 5, 2021 · The only sure fire way to see if your YouTube app is playing HDR is to use YouTube's Stats for Nerds overlay. If you see video codec is VP9.2, you know it is HDR. YouTube apps on TV or streaming devices don't show HDR icons.

Nvidia shield will not play HDR at all on YouTube app. This is an internal hardware limitation (VP9 profile or something like that) and its the only flaw the shield has from what I can tell. The thing is a beast otherwise. Sadly I cannot use it on my main rig as it has CEC issues with my 4k blu ray player.
