Scott County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. Its county seat is Scott City, [3] the only incorporated city in the county. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 5,151. [2] The county was named after Winfield Scott, a general in the United States Army from 1814 to 1861.

Scott County was once part of the land that was the old Washington County, Peketon County, and later an enlarged Marion County.

The Kansas Legislature created Scott County in 1873. At this time it was named in honor of General Winfield Scott. Since it was such a small town with so few people, there was no need for a local government.

The City of Scott City has a Governing Body consisting of the Mayor and eight City Council members who are elected by the people of the City. The Mayor is elected by the City at large, and the eight Council members are elected from each of the four wards of the City, two from each ward.
