As reported by the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 426 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 420 square miles (1,100 km2) is land and 5.9 square miles (15 km2) (1.4%) is water. The county's eastern border with Illinois is formed by the Mississippi River.

Thirty years later the community had outgrown the building.
