His epistles (letters) have had enormous influence on Christian theology, especially on the relationship between God the Father and Jesus, and on the mystical human relationship with the divine.

- A Founder of Christianity. In the last century, scholars have come to appreciate Paul as the actual founder of the religious movement that would become Christianity.
- Paul's Works. In the New Testament, we have 14 letters traditionally assigned to Paul, but the scholarly consensus now holds that of the 14, seven were actually written by Paul
- Paul's Conversion. Paul was a Pharisee, and claims that when it came to “the Law,” he was more zealous and knew more about the law than anyone else. For the most part in his letters, the Law at issue was the Law of Moses.
- Paul as a Persecutor. Paul probably meted out what he himself received - the 39 lashes, a form of synagogue discipline. But this raises more questions. Synagogue councils had authority only upon the agreement of those in the community.

- Why he became a Christian. Journeying to Damascus Paul had an encounter with the risen Christ (Acts 9: 1-19). He became convinced that fellowship with the risen Jesus (Gal 1:11-12), not the observance of the Law (Gal 3:1-5), was the necessary and sufficient condition for receiving and participating in God’s promise for salvation.
- Missionary Strategy. Paul believed that Christ had come for all and the observances of Jewish Law were not necessary for those who believed in Christ (Gal 2:15-21 - 3:1-5).
- St. Paul’s Essential Message. In Jesus Christ God had acted to provide salvation for all who believe (Rom 1: 1-7). This salvation, whose complete realization lay in the future, has its beginnings in the present.
- Centrality of Jesus Christ. Christians are united with Christ through faith (Rom 5: 1-2) and rejoice in the gift of God’s Spirit, waiting for the time when the Lord will return and the work of salvation complete (1 Thess 4:13-18).
