The Empyrean is FAR from unrivaled in the clarity and detail department. That is actually considered their weakest point from my understanding (having never listened to them). As blue said, there are other headphones such as the HD 800/S that win out in this category at a much lower retail price.
Going up their line, The Elites do step it up, and in terms of technical performance, and they were noticeably better than my Elex being about on par with the 2021 lcdx that I heard, and a tad behind the Arya. Soundstage wise, the Elites were not too different from the Empyrean but the imaging was a good bit tighter.
Here is what I came up with and why. The Empyrean sounded great on anything it was paired with; however, the Stellia on the the Tube system (Feliks) and the Abyss with the Formula S (both of which are the recommended amps for each) sounded clearly, definitively clearer, faster, crisper and perfecter (I made that up) than the Empyrean.
