- Light microscopes use visible light which passes and bends through the lens system. Electron microscopes use a beam of electrons, opposed to visible light, for magnification. Electron microscopes allow for higher magnification in comparison to a light microscope thus, allowing for visualization of cell internal structures.
It’s important to understand the basic principles of the wave/particle properties of visible light, which is one small section of the electromagnetic spectrum. Electrons also have both wave and particle-like properties, so many of the principles that underlie electron microscopy are similar to those that underlie light microscopy.

Due to the magnification limits of light microscopes, in order to gain a better understanding of cellular structure and function, scientists typically use electron microscopes (see image (b) in the figures below) that use electrons (subatomic particles) to carry images instead of light.
Light microscopy uses lenses to focus light on a specimen to produce an image. Commonly used light microscopes include brightfield, darkfield, phase-contrast, differential interference contrast, fluorescence, confocal, and two-photon microscopes.

Oct 13, 2017 · Light microscopy has several features that make it ideally suited for imaging biology in living cells: the resolution is well-matched to the sizes of subcellular structures, a diverse range of available fluorescent probes makes it possible to mark proteins, organelles, and other structures for imaging, and the relatively nonperturbing nature of ...
Cell structure - Edexcel Light microscopes. Light and electron microscopes allow us to see inside cells. Plant, animal and bacterial cells have smaller components each with a specific...
