High-flow oxygen therapy may be considered in selected patients for treatment of breathlessness, especially if they have hypoxaemic respiratory failure (II, B). A therapeutic trial for NIV can be considered in patients with cancer with severe chronic breathlessness, especially in patients with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure (II, B).
Nov 30, 2022 · The scientific evidence to support the use of oxygen therapy to relieve dyspnea in cancer patients (herein called “palliative oxygen”) is scarce and its prescription is controversial.
The RCP report 9 says that domiciliary oxygen therapy can be prescribed for palliation of dyspnoea in pulmonary malignancy and other terminal disease. It does not specify hypoxaemia, because not all breathless patients are hypoxaemic and not all hypoxaemic patients benefit from oxygen therapy.
Nov 22, 2019 · When cancer cells hijack the process, they can fuel their own growth, and gain the ability to metastasize and resist chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The difference in oxygen levels between cancer cells and normal cells continues to inspire research.
Jun 7, 2022 · Unscrupulous use of Oxygen in cancer patients may be deleterious rather than being useful. This chapter focuses on the various aspects of oxygen therapy in oncology patients, their indications, types of oxygen delivery devices, monitoring, side-effects, and their role in palliative care.
