Sep 23, 2023 · Why should you study abroad in college? Here are just a few advantages of traveling overseas, plus quick tips to help you have the adventure of a lifetime.
Study abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity, unlike any college semester or travel experience. Throughout the semester, you’ll adopt a new routine, immersing yourself in a new language and culture. You’ll travel, meet locals, and connect with like-minded students. These experiences will give you a new perspective and expand your worldview.
- Global awareness. You can only learn so much about another culture by watching National Geographic documentaries. If you really want to thrive in life, learning how to view things from another’s perspective is imperative.
- Meaningful connection. You’ll learn a lot about another culture by living in abroad, and you have the chance to make lifelong connections and meaningful relationships.
- Societal harmony. When you study abroad, you come home with a wealth of knowledge. Not just from the classes you took, but the perspective you’ve gained.
- Focus on your degree. When you’re looking at programs abroad, you can be super picky when making decisions on where to go and what to study. You get to fully immerse yourself in a program that focuses solely on your area of study.
- It’ll look good on your CV. Experience of living internationally goes down well with employers, showing you have experience dealing with people from different cultures, plus a higher level of adaptability.
- Brush up on your language skills. Remember the foreign languages you learned in school? No, me neither. Refresh them by studying abroad; you might be surprised at how much you remember.
- Living in a foreign country is completely different to a holiday. You’ll actually get to experience your place of study in the long term, picking up local knowledge such as where sells the best coffee, what tourist traps to avoid and how to get the most out of your new city.
- Meet a diverse range of people. Your exposure to many different types of people will not only help you to develop your people skills, but it will also give you a more in-depth knowledge of others, particularly those from different cultures.
