Howerd is the slave Lurcio (pronounced Lurk-io); his bumbling old master Ludicrus Sextus (Max Adrian, then Wallas Eaton), the promiscuous wife is Ammonia (Elizabeth Larner), their daughter Erotica (Georgina Moon) and their virginal son Nausius (Kerry Gardner).
Lurcio is arrested and, due to the resemblance, is ordered by General Ponderous to become Caesar's body double. Ludicrus finds Ammonia in Caesar's arms and, believing him to be Lurcio, tries to kill him.
The film has the destruction of Pompeii occur before both the death of Nero and the Great Fire of Rome. Lurcio somehow knows what a hamster wheel is, despite that not being invented until at least 1929. An Arm and a Leg: Gorgo threatens to rip off Lurcio's arms during their wrestling match.
Lurcio is a much-put-upon slave in the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. More often than not, Lurcio finds himself keeping his owner's family members apart, in order to keep them together.
