Spartacus begins a slave rebellion, but Lurcio refuses to join due to cowardice. Lurcio is mistaken for a rebel anyway and imprisoned. Lurcio learns of a Roman plan to kill all the slaves in Pompeii and decides he is safer in prison. Ludicrus, Ammonia and Nausius all make attempts to free Lurcio but are themselves arrested.
Lurcio was the slave for Ludicrus Sextus, a government senator, and his busty wife Ammonia, and every episode embroiled him as the innocent pawn in a complex plot that threatened his easy-going lifestyle, his job or even his life, although all would be happily resolved at the end of each story, with Lurcio usually escaping his fate by the skin of his teeth.
The series is set in ancient, pre-eruption Pompeii, with the players bearing Latinised names suggestive of their character.Howerd is the slave Lurcio (pronounced Lurk-io); his bumbling old master Ludicrus Sextus (Max Adrian, then Wallas Eaton), the promiscuous wife is Ammonia (Elizabeth Larner), their daughter Erotica (Georgina Moon) and their virginal son Nausius (Kerry Gardner).
