Aug 8, 2019 · The real Macbeth killed Duncan in battle in 1040 and Macbeth (or Mac Bethad) actually went on to rule for 17 years, until he was killed and Macbeth’s stepson, known as Lulach the Idiot, became king (though he only ruled for less than a year – then Malcolm, as Malcolm III, took the crown).
Analysis. The two murderers lie in wait a mile from the royal castle. A third murderer joins them, sent by Macbeth. The Third Murderer is an unsolved mystery. No critics know who he is or why he's there. Active Themes. Banquo and Fleance enter. The murderers attack. Banquo is killed, but Fleance escapes.

To call Macbeth a violent play is an understatement. It begins in battle, contains the murder of men, women, and children, and ends not just with a climactic siege but the suicide of Lady Macbeth and the beheading of its main character, Macbeth.
