They knew they were getting cancelled and so they tried to wrap up the story as best they could. The result felt unsatisfying and rushed. I love the scenes with the Chig ambassador as we finally get to learn a little about their motivations.
The series was cancelled after only one season, and I remember reading somewhere online, a few years after it was cancelled, that the producers had written the whole plot for the series but couldn't release it to fans due to copyright issue or something similar.
