Jun 19, 2010 · Now, as all of you know, I'm thinking about jumping into the 2600 pool. That being said, I know that with the first model Atari 7800, it works with almost all 2600 games, so all that's left is the 5200. My question is this: did they make a device that plays 5200 games on the 7800 and thus making ...
The reason you can’t play 5200 games on 7800 is the lack of a common architecture. While 5200 uses ANTIC and GTIA coprocessors for graphics, 7800 uses the custom MARIA chip. The Atari 7800 processes sprites and backgrounds differently from its predecessor. Both the 7800 and 5200 use MOS 6502-based processors, but they have subtle differences.
Nov 16, 2002 · That is probably what hurt the 7800 so much. The ratio of third-party games to first-party games on the 5200 is much higher than that of the 7800. If the 7800 had the same number of first-party games, but had third-party games released at the same ratio (compared to first-party games) as the 5200 did, then the 7800 would've had over 100 games ...
Nov 20, 2006 · Step 13: Enioy playing 5200 games on your 7800 system! Here's a photo of the new adapter in action! (Note that the 7800 may not be visible while the 5200 game adapter is in use.) Your adpater should make your 7800 compatible with all 5200 video games and accessories. This includes the 5200 joystick, the trackball, and the 2600 adapter.
Jun 8, 2013 · A lot of people love the 5200, I personally can't get over the crappy controls and don't have the time, patience or money to waste when I can play 98% of the same games on an atari 8-bit computer with regular joysticks and no headaches. That's my two cents, spend it as you see fit.
Enjoy these Atari 5200 game console and Atari 800XL computer and video games. In the 80’s, this 8 bit family of games were introduced as a higher-end complement to the 2600 game console . It was superseded by the Atari 7800 game console.

The 5200 was based on the Atari 400/800 computers, a completely different chip set, games released on the computers and the 5200 looked identical. The 7800 uses a lot of the same tech as the 2600, including the same sound chip for nearly all of its games (which is why it doesn't sound that great.) 7800 games mostly looked better than 5200 games though certainly not a whole generation better.
