Devo, short for “De-Evolution,” formed in Kent, Ohio, in 1973. They formed as artistic response to the May, 1970 shooting of unarmed war protestors on the Kent State campus.
Devo was an American new-wave band that took its name from devolution, the theory of humankind’s regression that informed the band’s music and stage act, which enjoyed success in the early 1980s. Devo adopted a man-as-machine persona and a heavy mechanical sound.
