This product is based on the OVATION model and provides a 30 to 90 minute forecast of the location and intensity of the aurora. The forecast lead time is the time it takes for the solar wind to travel from the L1 observation point to Earth.
Oct 27, 2024 · This page provides a prediction of the aurora’s visibility tonight and tomorrow night in the charts below. The animations further down show what the aurora’s been up to over the last 24 hours and estimates what the next 30 minutes will be like.
Tomorrow Night's Aurora Viewline. This is a prediction of the intensity and location of the aurora borealis tonight and tomorrow night over North America. It also shows a 'viewline' that represents the southern-most locations from which you may see the aurora on the northern horizon.
Below you'll find the daily maximum expected global geomagnetic conditions (Kp) for the coming 27 days. This is the fastest way to quickly find out what kind of geomagnetic conditions are to be expected over the next 27 days. These predictions are updated weekly by the NOAA SWPC.
Get real-time aurora borealis forecasts for Northern skies. Stay updated on the best times to see the northern lights with accurate aurora activity predictions.
Space Weather Conditions. The Sun is officially in solar maximum of Solar Cycle 25. The space weather enterprise recently completed a comprehensive survey of the needs of users of space weather products. SWPC has released an experimental version of the Global Total Electron Content (GloTEC) ionospheric model.
Oct 27, 2024 · This three-day forecast and many other sites, including the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), rely on the Kp index as an indicator of the auroral oval size. Inside the auroral oval, however, Kp is less relevant, since even when global activity is low, auroral activity can be high.
This product is designed to be a one page, simple look at recently observed and a three day forecast of space weather conditions. A brief description of why conditions occurred or are forecast is also included for each category.
The best place to observe the aurora is under an oval shaped region between the north and south latitudes of about 60 and 75 degrees. At these polar latitudes, the aurora can be observed more than half of the nights of a given year.
Oct 26, 2020 · The Space Weather Prediction Center is pleased to announce the operational release of improved 30 minute auroral prediction maps beginning October 28th. These maps are based on the OVATION-2013 model, which has an expanded range of geomagnetic activity coverage.
