She was a passenger in a car driven by a family friend that pulled into oncoming traffic. She died from her injuries at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas several hours later.

Paola had spent several years of her life in a concentration camp. She and Welles were married in 1955, two days before his 40th birthday. They remained married til the end of his life.
