The Nature Restoration Law is the first continent-wide, comprehensive law of its kind. It is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, which sets binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, in particular those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters.

Objectives. The Habitats Directive aims to protect over a thousand species, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish invertebrates, and plants, and 230 characteristic habitat types. Jul 18, 2022 · The proposal for a Nature Restoration Law, which would set legally binding targets for nature restoration, will build on work that is already being done to restore nature, such as the large-scale efforts that cities are carrying out as part of the Green City Accord. The Commission aims to restore 20% of ecosystems by 2030, in line with cities’ delivery of their Green City Accord commitments.
