Jul 14, 2020 · Our Main Library in George Square is one of the largest academic libraries in the world with more than 2,300 study spaces. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our other libraries also have extensive opening hours, and award-winning staff available to help.
Edinburgh University Library is the main library of the University of Edinburgh and one of the most important libraries of Scotland. The University Library was moved in 1827 to William Playfair's Upper Library in the Old College building.

Quiet and silent study space
1. Floors 2 - 5 and the Lower Ground Floor of the Main Library are designated quiet study. Floor 5 of the Main Library is a silent study area and pre-booking of seats is required. Please note this area has no PCs, however, there are floor points where laptops can be connected.
Bookable Study Space
In the Main Library there are 65 bookable spaces available to PG Students only, in the Red zone on the 5th Floor, and 104 bookable spaces available to all Students in the Blue zone on the 5thFloor. Pre-booking is via the SeatEd app or online form.
Group study space
Study pods are available for group study in the Main Library. Pods are designed for groups to meet and discuss their ideas and to work on presentations. The pods are equipped with a PC, plasma screen, headphone sockets and a whiteboard. Pods can't be booked - they are available on a first come, first served basis and should only be used by groups of 3. Library study space
ECA Library has a total of 57 permanent study spaces at desks and tables and informal, soft seating for a further 32 people.
Study space with computers
There are 11 open access Windows PCs in the library: 9 on the ground floor (Level 0) and 2 near the library entrance on the 1st floor (Level 1).
Group study
There are no facilities for group study.
The Art and Architecture Library is located on the ground and lower ground floors of Minto House, Chambers Street
Quiet and silent study
The library is a quiet study space with 60 study spaces, most of which have power sockets and 10 soft seating chairs for informal study. There is also dedicated silent study space adjacent to the Library which offers 32 study spaces and 10 workstations with PCs.
Study space with computers
There are 6 open access computers and 1 standing quick use computer in the Library. The printing/photocopying/scanning facilities are available in the Library and in the Study Landscape.
Accessible study space
There is an adjustable height desk with an accessible PC with assistive technology located by the tutorial room 1.46. The standing height desk is located by the window in the far corner of the Library. The whole library is designated as silent study space with 171 study spaces.
Group study
There are 2 group study rooms which sit 4 people each. Group study rooms at the Law Library can booked via MyEd. The rooms can be found under the building name Old College. Booking study rooms via MyEd

There are 65 open access PCs. The library has printing/photocopying/scanning facilities.
Quiet and silent study
The whole of the main library hall is designated quiet study space with 88 spaces. There are also 24 study spaces in the David Welsh Reading Room which are designated for silent study.

There are no facilities for group study.

There is one open access lab PC. However, most reader spaces are equipped with power points and wireless is available. The library has printing/photocopying/scanning facilities.

The 2nd floor is designated quiet study space with 28 desks and the 3rd floor is for silent study with 35 desks.

There are several areas for group and conversational study. 1. Ground floor - 20 seats situated around 3 clusters of tables. 2. 1st floor - 8 study desks and casual seating for 26. 1. Ground floor - 8 cafe PCs. 2. 1st floor - 18 open access PCs, 4 Quick Use PCs plus 11 uCreate multimedia PCs. Printer/photocopy/scanning facilities are also available on this floor. 3. 2nd floor - 11 open access PCs.
Quiet and silent study
The whole of the library is a designated quiet study space with 73 study spaces and 8 easy chairs for informal study located on the 1st floor and additional 10 study desks on the 2nd floor in the Computer and Study suite. Power sockets are available throughout the library as well as wireless access.

There are no facilities for group study.

There are 50 open access computers: 4 open access PCs are located on the 1st floor and 46 University networked PCs are located on the 2nd floor in the Computer and Study suite. There are also 19 NHS Net computers available on the 2nd floor in the Computer and Study suite. The printing/photocopying/scanning facilities are available in the Library on the 1st floor and in the Computer and Study suite on the 2nd floor.
Quiet and silent study
The library is a designated quiet study space with 14 study desks with access to power sockets and the University wireless network for personal laptop computers.

There are 7 workstations with University networked PCs and 3 NHS Net computers in the Quiet Study Room located opposite to the Library. The printing/photocopying/scanning facilities are available in the Quiet Study Room.
