So it is similar to the Pocket Edition's MATTIS crafting system. The point of Minecraft isn't to force players to memorize crafting recipes, it just happens over time. So I would not consider using console crafting cheating
PC people use Wiki, Console people can choose between classic crafting (which I do) and auto crafting. It's the same as PC. Actually, PC is worse, because Console can do classic crafting like PC, but PC can't do crafting like console.
We spent hours trying to figure out how to make rails on a slope without realizing they just connect. Before all the infrastructure for people to look up recipes or get them from the game I really think it was trial and error, along with people sharing them with each other.
