Calla lily is an herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennial grown from rhizomes. Tubular shaped flowers with pointed tips produce a long, finger-like spadix at the center. Blooms come in colors of white, yellow, orange, pink, red, purple, green, or black. Tall elegant stems rise above broad solid green or speckled leaves. Are calla lilies poisonous?
- Choose The Right Rhizomes (or Tubers) Choose rhizomes that are large, firm, and plump. The size of the rhizomes is highly correlated to the overall size of the plant and its blossoms.
- Select The Right Site. Calla Lilies grow in full sun or partial shade. Full sun is best in cool summer areas but part shade is preferred in hot summer areas.
- Planting Your Calla Lilies. Calla rhizomes should be planted in spring. They may be started indoors as early as a month before the average last frost date (for earlier blooms) or planted directly in the ground after the danger of frost has passed.
- Aftercare. Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and do not allow the soil to dry out. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks until the flowers have faded.
