This community centre and arena is named for NHL player Joe Thornton, who is from St. Thomas. Thornton was drafted #1 overall to the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He has also played with the San Jose Sharks, and in 2020 was signed to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
