Born and raised Brooklyn, NY, to a Jewish family, he has a brother, Ken and a nephew, Sam. Lerner got a BA at City University of New York, Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY and a MA at the University of California, Berkeley, CA.
Lerner made his television debut on Dr. Kildare in 1963 and his film debut in Alex in Wonderland in 1970. He would guest star on The Brady Bunch, The Good Guys, The Doris Day Show in the late 1960s and That Girl, Ironside, The New Perry Mason, M*A*S*H, Emergency! and The Bob Newhart Showin the early 1970s. Michael Lerner was an American actor from New York City, the older brother of actor Ken Lerner. He was once nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the domineering studio head Jack Lipnick in "Barton Fink" (1991).
In episode 17 of Season 2, "For Want Of A Boot", Michael Lerner portrayed the camp Dentist, Dr. Futterman, who, for a pass to Tokyo, would fix Zale's teeth. This, among other things, Hawkeye hoped would eventually lead to a new pair of boots.
