Sergeant Larry Starczek (Tom Selleck) heads the investigation, with his lover, attorney Muriel Wynn (Monica Potter) taking a close interest. A half-witted small-time hustler named Romeo 'Squirrel' Gandolph (Glenn Plummer) is arrested, soon confesses and ends up on death row.
Based on Scott Turow's novel of the same name about an attorney who is handed a death row case in the 11th hour to discover that his client, a semi-retarded man accused of a triple homicide, is innocent and he must present a case that eventually frees the man.
