The Outsiders is a coming-of-age novel by S. E. Hinton, first published in 1967 by Viking Press. Ponyboy Curtis, a teenager member of a loose gang of "greasers", is leaving a movie theater when he is jumped by "Socs", the greasers' rival gang.
In a small Oklahoma town in 1964, the rivalry between two gangs, the poor Greasers and the rich Socs, heats up when one gang member accidentally kills a member of the other. It is 1961, and Tulsa, Oklahoma is divided in two along social lines.
