Installing direct to your GPS: The easiest way to install a map on your Garmin device is to put it in USB mass storage mode and copy the gmapsupp.img file(s) that you want to install to a directory called Garmin, or Map. If you want to use just POIs from OSM (e.g. "amenities") on your Garmin device, along with the maps that Garmin provided, have a look at the "Using POIs from OSM along with Garmin Maps" page. Garmin also offers a free POI Extra packthat is generated out of OSM data (Europe) and released under ODbL.
Newer Generations of Garmin Devices can display raster maps via the KMZ capability and Birdseye view. Garmin's use of the KMZ format is rather limited and allows only for smaller maps. OSM maps should work on all Garmin devices which support uploading maps. These include the Colorado, eTrex Legend, eTrex Vista, eTrex Summit, eTrex Venture, GPSMAP, Nüvi, Zūmo, Oregon, Quest and Streetpilot ranges. I just include a lot of pictures/text to make it super-clear. I myself often use the freely downloaded variant I describe below (because I live in Europe, but often buy my units in the US).
Sep 8, 2012 · 1) Download a map from somewhere (easier, but less customisable) 2) Create your own. If you want to download a map, there's a list of providers here. There are lots of options - some routeable and some not, customised for different uses, etc. I've heard people recommend the ones here.
