    • Every performance is brilliant. To assert this may seem obvious, with the powerhouse cast of Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Paul Newman (Oscar-nominated), and Daniel Craig.
    • Its resonant themes about retribution and loyalty. The film does not shy away from the themes of revenge. This is not an obvious lesson showing that seeking revenge stokes hostility, but a much more sophisticated idea about the self-respect involved in avenging wrongs.
    • Features a more complex, less-than-noble hero. Tom Hanks’ career was built on playing decent, compassionate Everymen. As a hitman, basically, in Perdition, the audience’s sense of the actor is immediately thrown off.
    • Its ending walks the fine line between melancholy and uplift. As with many effective films about complex heroes, Road to Perdition does not end happily–at least not in traditional ways.
  2. Nov 3, 2022 · My favorite Paul Newman performance is his final on-screen one, as mob boss John Rooney in Sam Mendes’s Road to Perdition. It’s a good, not great, film, which is a disappointment given its phenomenal cast and to-die-for Conrad Hall cinematography.

As the saying goes, the pathway to hell is paved with good intentions. While this movie did make money in 2002 I think it just gets lost among other masterpieces because it feels of a different era. The moral code and story is about a world we knew existed already. This is a movie about a time gone by. America might have come out of World War II wi...

  3. Jan 22, 2020 · Thomas Newman got his chance when Sam Mendes was elected by Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to direct Skyfall. Reportedly, Mendes made it a condition that was able to select the film's composer.

  4. Jul 11, 2022 · What results is another look at America, but through a historical lens that mostly succeeds in its commentary on the fraught relationships between fathers and sons. Tom Hanks stars as Michael Sullivan, a depression-era mob enforcer who finds that the man who brought him up, John Rooney (Paul Newman), ordered a hit on him and his family.

  5. Mendes and Craig stayed good friends after Road to Perdition. Years later, when Craig already had two Bond films under his belt, Mendes went to see him on stage in New York.
