The Scooby Gang was formed in 1996 with the alliance between the Slayer Buffy, her Watcher Giles, and her classmates Willow and Xander. While the Slayer traditionally worked alone and in secret, Willow and Xander decided to continue helping Buffy against the forces of darkness after she saved them from vampires.

Willow ignores Buffy and Xander criticizes her at the party. It's absurd behavior really, In the beginning of season 3, Xander and Willow force the idea of Buffy dating someone else to "get over Angel" although Buffy is clearly still hung up on Angel and not okay.
