Video: First Resume Tips: How to Make a Resume with No Work ExperienceIn this video, we share first resume tips based on the latest resume writing best practices and provide resume examples to help you brainstorm ideas.

Whether you are looking for your first job or making a career change, starting a resume is an important part of getting hired. A strong introduction followed by a consistent, detailed and concise resume can help your resume get noticed by recruiters. In this article, we’ll discuss how to get your resume started.

A resume is typically an employer’s first introduction to you as a job candidate. First impressions are crucial in establishing yourself as a potentially valuable asset to the hiring professional’s team. A well-planned resume can demonstrate your knowledge of business standards, communication abilities and professional and personal achievements. By...

    1. Gather your information

Before you sit down to write your resume, it can be beneficial to collect all of your material. Your resume will need to include your dates of employment and relevant job duties, skills, certifications, education and more. When you have all of the necessary information compiled in advance, you can make a more strategic plan for starting your resume. For instance, the font size and style you use could depend on how much information you have and how much space you want to allot to it.

    2. Create a header

Your resume and cover letter should have the same header for consistency. Design your header to show your personality, but keep it appropriate for your industry. For example, a businessperson’s header should be more straightforward and less creative than a web designer’s header. At minimum, the header needs to include your name, phone number and e-mail address. Your name should be in the largest font on the resume so the recruiter clearly knows whose resume they are looking at. Ensure your voicemail greeting and email address are professional in case the hiring manager needs to contact you.You can add your mailing address, but if you are seeking a job in a different state, you can omit your address to let the recruiter know you are open to relocation. Alternatively, you can write “Open to relocate” instead of an address. If you are applying for a creative position, include relevant links, such as a website, digital portfolio or social media profiles. Adding these elements can display your creative skills before you have an interview.

    3. Choose a resume introduction

The introduction is one of the most important parts of your resume. It needs to grab the recruiter’s attention so they take time to review the rest of your resume. With the volume of applications a recruiter reviews, a memorable introduction can stand out and help you get an interview. The format of your introduction can vary depending on your industry, qualifications, experience and whether you are seeking a job in your current industry or a new field. Three common resume introductions are:

    • Pick Your Format. Before you start typing one single thing, you have to decide what you want the overall resume to look like. Resume builders can be helpful for this step—they’ll take all your basic information and organize it for you, eliminating some of the legwork.
    • Start With Your Basic Information. Your contact information should always go at the top of your resume. In this header you’ll want to include anything that could be helpful for a recruiter to get in touch with you.
    • Add in Your Work Experience. This section will most likely be the bulk of your resume. Even if you’re changing careers, employers still want to see where you’ve worked, what you’ve done, and the impact of that work to get a sense of your background and expertise.
    • Consider Including Volunteer Work or Other Experience. Anything you’ve done that’s not work experience—your side gig, volunteer work, special projects—can be hosted under clearly-labeled sections (“Volunteer Experience” or “Activities,” for example).
