The Big Short is a 2015 American biographical crime comedy-drama film directed and co-written by Adam McKay. Co-written by Charles Randolph, it is based on the 2010 book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis showing how the 2007–2008 financial crisis was triggered by the United States housing bubble.

- A brief summary of the financial crisis. In a very, very small nutshell, the meltdown happened because banks were irresponsibly giving mortgages to people who couldn't afford them (and, in truth, probably shouldn't have taken them on).
- What it means to "short" something. Most people, correctly, think of successful investing as buying stocks or bonds when prices are low (because you believe their value will go up) and later selling high.
