The small town of Komenda, located in a flat part of the Ljubljana basin near the town of Kamnik, has an interesting history. It was the site of a Roman staging post, a Slavic settlement and - between 1223 and 1892 - a commandery of the Order of Malta.

Komenda je razpotegnjeno naselje ob lokalni cesti, severno od glavne ceste Kranj - Mengeš. Vas je staro cerkveno središče, saj je prvotna cerkev Sv. Petra, župnijska cerkev prafare in župnije Komenda, prvič omenjena že 1147. Novo baročno so zgradili 1727, po potresu 1895 pa obnovili in povečali.
