The French presque isle means “almost an island,” based on the twists and turns of the Aroostook River and the Presque Isle Stream. The community was first connected with the “outside” when the road up from Monticello was completed in 1839. The first mail was brought on horseback three years later.
The development of Presque Isle which received its first settlers in 1819 and Aroostook County which was separated from Washington County in 1839 coincides with the expansion of the western United States more so than the development of central and southern Maine.
