The history of Richmond Hill began when the First Nations came and settled in the area. With the Toronto Purchase, the city gradually expanded with new greenhouse industries and improved transportation infrastructure. The first humans to come to the area were probably Paleo-Indians between 9000 and 7000 BCE. [1] .
Early in the twentieth century, several large greenhouse operations were built in Richmond Hill, while rose growing turned the City into the "rose capital" of Canada. In the 1920's, village council adopted the motto of the Duke of Richmond, for whom the City may have been named.
