Roxbury (/ ˈ r ɒ k s b ər i /) is a neighborhood within the City of Boston, Massachusetts, United States. [ 1 ] Roxbury is a dissolved municipality and one of 23 official neighborhoods of Boston used by the city for neighborhood services coordination.
One of the first towns founded in Massachusetts Bay, Roxbury is located at the geographic center of Boston. Serving as the heart of Black culture in Boston, Roxbury considered seceding from Boston during the late 1980s.

Roxbury’s location and high hills made the town strategically important during the Siege of Boston, in 1775-1776. After the battles of Lexington and Concord, the colonists chased the British back to Boston and then encircled Boston from Cambridge to Roxbury. The British were trapped in Boston for almost a year.
