It was the first independent television station in Canada, and Calgary was the first Canadian city to have two English-language television stations. CFRN Television began broadcasting at 3:00 p.m. on October 25th. It operated on channel 3. The station’s launch featured a live presentation from the transmitter room, using a single camera. CFRN-TV was Alberta’s second television station. The transmitter and tower were located beside the one-storey studio building, six miles west of Edmonton.
In 1935 the country's first commercial newscast, sponsored by Texaco, was broadcast by CFCN. In 1954 CFCN radio joined with two other stations to bring the first television to Calgary as CHCT-TV (Calgary Television), headed by Love.
On September 30, 2012, CFRN-DT became the second television station in Edmonton (after Global-owned station CITV-DT) and the fourth CTV owned-and-operated station to begin broadcasting its local newscasts in high definition, beginning with that evening's 6 p.m. newscast. [21]
