On May 11, 1858, the Territory of Minnesota received approval from Congress to become the thirty second state to join the union. That same day, citizens of Minnesota's newly established town of Richland met in a schoolhouse near Richland Mills, at present-day 53rd and Lyndale, to form a municipal government.
The city was named after Richfield Township, which was established in 1858. It became an independent village in 1908 and was officially incorporated as a city in 1950. The first commercial airport in Minnesota, known as Wold-Chamberlain Field at the time, was located in Richfield. It later became the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
