Historical Timeline. 1733 - Three Welshmen- Hugh Jones, David Lewis, and Evan Price were the first settlers to be granted warrants for the land west of the Schuylkill River. 1810 - A brick home, one the first buildings in what would become West Reading, is erected and occupied by William Hinnershitz.

Taking its name from Reading, Berkshire, England, the town was established in 1748. Upon the creation of Berks County in 1752, Reading became the county seat. The region was settled by emigrants from southern and western Germany, who bought land from the Penns.
The 19th century saw the coming of the Great Western Railway and the development of the town's brewing, baking and seed growing businesses, and the town grew rapidly as a manufacturing centre. Reading is also the county town of Berkshire.
Like its municipal neighbor, West Reading was first settled in 1733, but while Reading grew to become the 5th largest city in Pennsylvania, West Reading remained relatively unchanged until the end of the 20th century.
