In 2009, Alan Schaaf made Imgur as a "gift to Reddit". It's simple design, and reddit integration, plus being able to upload easily makes it popular for anyone to use, as you can drag drop/copy paste. It generally is leaps and bounds ahead of most other public image hosts. And yet, people still use Photobucket.
