The church is the oldest and highest ranking of the four major papal basilicas as well as one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome, holding the unique title of "archbasilica". Founded in 324, it is the oldest public church in the city of Rome, and the oldest basilica of the Western world. [1]
The massive doors of Saint John Lateran are over 2000 years old, actually close to 2102 years old. They are so perfectly balanced, it takes only one guy to open and close them – but they are a bit squeaky! I shot this video on one of the rare times the doors are opened, at the end of a funeral Mass.
Dec 23, 2019 · The great bronze doors of the Basilica of St John Lateran once belonged to the Senate House in the Forum. The doors, which date back to the reign of the emperor Domitian (r. 81-96), were moved here in 1660 at the bequest of Pope Alexander VII (r. 1655-67)
St. John Lateran doors: Guarding the St. John Lateran basilica are two monolithic bronze doors, green with age. Once affixed to the ancient Roman senate house, they’re nearly 2000 years old, but were only brought to the basilica in the 17th century.

May 1, 2023 · The enormous bronze doors at the entrance of St. John Lateran once belonged to the Curia Julia, or Senate House in the Roman Forum. An excellent example of artefacts from the Roman Empire being reused, the bronze central doors of the basilica were once the doors to the ancient Senate building.
Archbasilica of St. John Lateran was the site of several important historical events, including the coronation of several popes and the signing of the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy in 1929. The basilica is open to visitors every day, and admission is free.
