St. Peter's Baldachin ( Italian: Baldacchino di San Pietro, L'Altare di Bernini) is a large Baroque sculpted bronze canopy, technically called a ciborium or baldachin, over the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the city-state and papal enclave surrounded by Rome, Italy.

St. Peter's Baldacchino is a towering bronze canopy sculpted over the High Altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Even though sculpted canopies are ordinary in medieval churches and buildings, the Baldacchino in St. Peter's church was noted for its grandeur and the man who created it, famous Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The gilded bronze monument, which is almost 29 meters tall, rises on four slender twisted columns (which was presented in the basilica on June 29, 1627) which were inspired by the marble columns arranged around Peter's tomb in the ancient basilica.
Discover St. Peter’s Basilica’s most unique Baldacchino sculpture by Bernini, towering over the Altar at the center of the Church. It is one of the most famous sculptures covered in religious carvings, standing at a height of 66 feet!

Dec 16, 2019 · The grand facade of St Peter's Basilica is crowned with thirteen colossal statues. In the centre stands Christ the Redeemer (6 metres high) and you may be forgiven for assuming that he is flanked by his 12 apostles.
From the apse behind the baldacchino is the beautiful reliquary, also by Bernini, that encloses the “Chair” of Saint Peter, the throne where the Pope sat, taken from the medieval basilica.
