A short history of the Town of Bedford. On December 23, 1680 twenty two puritans walked up the “cart path”, now known as Long Ridge Road, from Stamford, Connecticut and purchased 7,673 acres from seven Indian Chiefs.

October 2, 1973. The Bedford Village Historic District is a national historic district in Bedford, Westchester County, New York. The district contains 80 contributing buildings and one contributing site. It encompasses most of the original 1680 hamlet and is laid out in a typical village green plan. [3]
The town of Bedford, officially established in 1682, includes the hamlets of Bedford Village, Bedford Hills, and Katonah. The building of reservoirs for New York City forced the removal of Katonah to its present site (1897), changed the town’s landscape, and stimulated a residential trend.

Bedford is an incorporated town in Westchester County, New York. The population was 17,309 at the 2020 census. Bedford is located in the northeastern part of Westchester County and contains the three hamlets of Bedford Hills, Bedford, and Katonah.
In 1700, by Royal Decree, King William III established that Bedford was “henceforth and forever” part of the royal colony of New York. By 1723, through additional purchases from Chief Katonah and other Mohegan chiefs the Town had grown to over thirty-six square miles.
