- About Ezra Stiles
Ezra Stiles College is one of the fourteen residential colleges at Yale University, built in 1961 and designed by Eero Saarinen. The college is named after Ezra Stiles, the seventh President of Yale. Architecturally, it is known for its lack of right angles between walls in the living areas.
Ezra Stiles College is named to honor the memory of Ezra Stiles, Yale Class of 1746, an eminent American theologian, lawyer, scientist, and philosopher, who served as the seventh President of Yale from 1778 to 1795.
Ezra Stiles (10 December [ O.S. 29 November] 1727 – May 12, 1795) [1] [2] was an American educator, academic, Congregationalist minister, theologian, and author. He is noted as the seventh president of Yale College (1778–1795) and one of the founders of Brown University.
In 1778, the Yale Corporation selected the Rev. Ezra Stiles to be the next President of Yale. The move, and the new job, prompted many changes for Stiles, including Newport's liberation. On June 9, 1778, Stiles wrote in his diary, "I freed or liberated my Negro Man Newport, about aged 30.
Sep 8, 2023 · In 2016, Yale University installed a plaque in the residential Ezra Stiles College that acknowledges Stiles’s involvement in slavery and indentured servitude and honors the memories of Newport, Jacob, and Aaron.
Stiles provided an overview of the then-existing European governments of his time, and evaluated their strengths and weaknesses--a discussion which framers of the European Union constitution may find interesting. Stiles went on to show how the American government was superior to other world governments.
