May 5, 2021 · That tensions between society and government, and their respective tolerances for violence, is the core narrative thrust of Harry Turtledove’s In the Presence of Mine Enemies. This is a world where Nazi Germany is the world’s hegemon, rivalling the Japanese, having conquered Europe and occupied America.
There's a Sophie's Choice moment in this movie, but is it really a choice? Captain Richter (Charles Dance) is perfect for a long roast over a low flame. There should be a spectecular movie devoted to the end of the Warsaw Ghetto, when David didn't slay Goliath, but he sure gave him hell:

There’s turmoil in the Reich, and Turtledove’s classic “obvious historical parallel” is to the late USSR with obvious “Gorbachev” and “Yeltsin” figures.
