This indulgent poutine recipe is easy to make at home with just four ingredi

Poutine, which was invented in Quebec in the 1950s, is a Canadian dish composed of fries topped with cheese curds and hot gravy. "Poutine" is a Quebecois slang word that means "mess."

You'll find a detailed ingredient list and step-by-step instructions in the recipe below, but let's go over the basics:

These are the four ingredients you’ll need to make this traditional poutine recipe:

You’ll need a quart of vegetable oil for frying.

Use a store-bought can of beef gravy or

    make your own at home

Russet potatoes work well for French fries, as they’re extra starchy.

“After putting the cheese curds on the fries, put them in the oven for a short time under the broiler,” recommends

“This melts the curds a bit. Then put the gravy on.”

“If you've never tried (or even heard of) poutine before, TRY THIS RECIPE,” says

“I live in Quebec and eat this very, very often.”

1 quart vegetable oil for frying

1 (10.25 ounce) can beef gravy

Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep heavy skillet to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).

While the oil is heating, begin to warm gravy.

Place fries into the hot oil, and cook until light brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Cook fries in batches if necessary to allow them room to move a little in the oil. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Place fries on a serving platter, and sprinkle cheese over them.

We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. Amount will vary depending on cooking time and temperature, ingredient density, and specific type of oil used.

Soaking the potatoes in water, then frying them at 350°F (177°C) and again at 425°F (218°C), creates fries with a crisp exterior and a soft, pillowy interior.
