Jul 17, 2012 · Russell Smith I attended the San Francisco Art Institute in the 60's and majored in painting,after which I traveled across the country, and ended up in Woodstock, New York from the late 60's until the mid 70's, painting and working odd jobs.
Russell Smith. 1812 - 1896. A painter of grand-scale landscapes in the mid-19th century, Russell Smith was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and emigrated with his parents in 1819 to western Pennsylvania where he grew up in Pittsburgh. His birth name was William Thompson Russell Smith.
An Artist Fellow and past president of the American Society of Aviation Artists, Russell’s work can be found in many collections, both public and private, around the world, including the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and the Omaka Aviation Heritage Center in New Zealand.
Russell Smith (“Ye-Ku-tla-las” - to give all) was one of the Northwest Coast’s most respected native artists. He was of the Sea Bear Clan and his crest was Thunderbird and Grizzly Bear.
