    The building was begun in 27 bc by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa as a rectangular temple but was completely rebuilt by Hadrian between ad 118 and 128. It is a circular building of concrete faced with brick with a great dome rising from the walls.

    The Pantheon is remarkable for its size, construction, and design; it has the largest dome built until modern times measuring 142 feet in diameter. The interior of the building is lined with colored marble while the exterior is plain. Dedicated as Santa Maria Rotonda or Santa Maria ad Martyres in 609 AD and remains so today.
