The Trinity School of John Whitgift, usually referred to as Trinity School, is a independent boys' day school with a co-educational sixth form, located in Shirley Park, Croydon. Part of the Whitgift Foundation, it was established in 1882 as Whitgift Middle School and was a direct grant grammar school from 1945 until 1968, when it left the scheme.
Archbishop John Whitgift founded the hospital and school in March 1596. The hospital was for the poor and the attached grammar school was conducted by the chief official of the hospital – the schoolmaster and chaplain. The School opened in 1600 and educated boys from Croydon and the surrounding area.
Whitgift was spending more time in Croydon and Lambeth, though Croydon and its environs suited him better and his greatest interest was the foundation of his hospital – or rather the Hospital and School of the Holy Trinity in the town of close to two thousand inhabitants, at the time, still surrounded by country estates and a Parish Church ...
It was renamed Trinity School of John Whitgift in 1954. 1965 Trinity School relocated to Shirley park, and its former site was developed to become the Whitgift Centre, one of the very first shopping complexes in the UK.
Trinity School is a leading independent school offering rich and balanced curriculum with first class facilities.
