I'll start with the cons: It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Don't get me wrong, Blacksburg is an amazing town, but you go outside the town lines, or even much off campus, there's nothing by farm fields (apart from Christiansburg, where all the shops, malls, food places, etc, are).
Blacksburg has a decent downtown scene and a good combination of bars, restaurants, and stores in the surrounding areas. If I had to say, you should be able to find most of what you are looking for in the area, except some specific regional/international foods. Though Tech does have some of the best on campus food in the nation.

From my time at Tech, I can honestly say that Tech offers a different community than that of JMU's, or any regular state school for that matter. Service (Ut Prosim) really is the backbone of VT, and that is backed up by the community outreach events we run here, and how many Tech students participate in service of some sort.
