Harold Edward Stassen (April 13, 1907 – March 4, 2001) was an American Republican Party politician, military officer, and attorney who was the 25th governor of Minnesota from 1939 to 1943. He was a leading candidate for the Republican nomination for president of the United States in 1948.
During a lifetime devoted to public service, Harold Stassen left an indelible mark upon American politics. He first gained national prominence in the 1930s by revitalizing Minnesota’s Republican Party and establishing a progressive, cooperative approach to state government.
Stassen ran for Republican nomination for President of the United States in 1944, 1948, 1952, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992. In his 1948 and 1952 campaigns, he ran competitively, but his other candidacies made little impact. He was regarded as a perennial candidate .

An attorney in South St. Paul, Stassen was elected Governor of Minnesota in 1938 at the young age of 31. Known as the “boy governor,” Stassen was the youngest person elected to that post. Stassen was reelected in 1940 and in 1942.
